Carden Playnames
In our preschool classrooms, we introduce young learners to letters and early literacy through play names—
fun, engaging ways to explore consonants in the alphabet that build both letter recognition and sound
awareness. Rather than simply memorizing symbols, children interact with each letter’s play name (a playful,
memorable way to identify the letter and its sound), helping them connect spoken language to written
symbols in a joyful, multi-sensory context. This play-based introduction supports the development of
emergent literacy skills by making the alphabet accessible and meaningful, laying a foundation for confident
reading and phonics work in the years ahead. Activities using play names engage children’s natural curiosity
and make early literacy feel like discovery and fun, not drill—honoring the Carden belief that learning should
feel like play and exploration.
