History & Geography
History and geography come alive through stories, maps, projects, and discussions that help
students see the world as an interconnected tapestry. From the earliest grades, children begin by
learning about their families, neighborhoods, and communities—building a foundation of personal
geography and civic awareness. As they grow, their studies expand outward to encompass
California history, U.S. history, and eventually the ancient and modern civilizations that have shaped
our world. Lessons are designed to foster curiosity and critical thinking. Students explore how
geography influences culture, how historical events shape societies, and how the past continues to
inform the present. Through interactive maps, timelines, and primary source exploration, they learn
to analyze cause and effect, recognize diverse perspectives, and appreciate the shared human
story.
A strong emphasis is placed on civic education and the principles of democracy. Students study the
Constitution, government structure, and the responsibilities of citizenship, developing an
understanding of justice, fairness, and the importance of civic engagement. They also explore world
cultures, traditions, and geography which develop empathy, global awareness, and respect for
diversity. By integrating history and geography across subjects, students begin to see patterns,
connections, and meaning in the world around them. This well-rounded approach not only builds
academic knowledge but also cultivates thoughtful, informed, and compassionate citizens who are
ready to contribute positively to their communities and the broader world.
