Discipline Philosophy
At Carden Conejo School, we believe that every child has the right to learn in a safe, respectful, and orderly
environment, and every teacher has the right to teach without disruption. Our approach to discipline is rooted
in clarity, consistency, and character development. Discipline is not about punishment, bur rather about
teaching responsibility, self-control, and respect for others. We use a structured, proactive model of
classroom management that emphasizes clear expectations, positive reinforcement, calm and consistent
correction, and logical and predictable consequences. Our goal is to guide students toward internal selfdiscipline while maintaining a strong and supportive learning environment.
Each classroom establishes a small set of clearly defined rules that are stated positively and clearly, are
observable and enforceable, and are taught directly and reviewed regularly. Students are explicitly taught
what respectful behavior looks like in the classroom, on the playground, in shared spaces, and during school
events. Expectations are consistent across grade levels and aligned with our core values of respect,
responsibility, integrity, and kindness.
We believe that students thrive when positive behavior is noticed and affirmed. Faculty members
intentionally recognize students who demonstrate:
Preparedness
Respectful communication
Self-control
Cooperation
Leadership and initiative
Positive reinforcement may include verbal praise, classroom privileges, leadership opportunities, written
recognition, or communication home celebrating student growth. When a student does not meet
expectations, faculty respond calmly and consistently. Students are reminded of the rule and given the
opportunity to correct their behavior. If misbehavior continues, consequences are applied in a predictable
and escalating manner. Consequences are clearly communicated in advance, are proportionate to the
behavior, and are designed to teach responsibility. Examples of corrective steps may include:
Verbal reminder
Warning
Loss of privilege or reflection time
Parent communication
Meeting with administration
More serious behaviors (e.g., physical aggression, bullying, harassment, dishonesty, or repeated defiance)
may result in immediate administrative involvement and could include detention, behavioral contracts,
suspension, or dismissal in severe cases.
Student Choice & Responsibility
Students are taught that behavior is a choice and choices have consequences. Our faculty maintain high
expectations and do not engage in arguments or power struggles. Instead, we model calm, respectful
communication and guide students toward better decisions.
Partnership with Families
We believe discipline is most effective when teachers at school and parents at home work together. Parents
will be informed when patterns of concern arise or when more serious incidents occur. Our goal in all
communication is partnership, supporting your child’s growth socially, emotionally, and academically.
Commitment to Character
Ultimately, our discipline philosophy reflects our mission: to form confident, capable young leaders of strong
character. We aim to cultivate students who demonstrate self-control, treat others with dignity, take
ownership of their actions, and contribute positively to our community.
