2026-2027 -- Carden Conejo Middle School - Flipbook - Page 23
Across all three years, Language Arts at Carden Conejo
Middle School strengthens the five pillars of
communication - literature, spelling and vocabulary,
grammar & mechanics, composition, and handwriting through daily reading, writing, and discussion.
Spelling & Vocabulary: Weekly study emphasizes meaning,
context, and application rather than rote memorization.
Students expand their expressive range by using new
words in both writing and speech, mastering roots,
prefixes, and word origins to strengthen reading fluency
and precision in communication.
Grammar & Mechanics: Through advanced language
programs and teacher-developed lessons, students refine
their understanding of diction, syntax, and sentence
structure. Grammar is taught as a tool for clear and elegant
expression, helping students recognize the rhythm and
logic of language as they develop their individual writing
voices.
Composition: Writing is woven throughout the day and
across subjects. Students craft creative stories, persuasive
essays, analytical responses, and research papers that
emphasize clarity, organization, and purpose. Focused
instruction in rhetoric and argumentation teaches students
to write and speak with logic and conviction.
Handwriting: Carden Conejo continues to emphasize the
importance of legible, thoughtful penmanship as a
reflection of care and discipline. Students practice proper
form, spacing, and cursive fluency, learning that neat,
intentional handwriting supports cognitive development,
reinforces spelling and grammar, and conveys pride in
one’s work.
Literature: Students explore classic and contemporary
works that foster critical thinking, empathy, and
imagination. From Greek mythology and Shakespeare to
modern novels and poetry, they analyze character, theme,
symbolism, and author’s purpose while connecting
literature to their own lives and the world around them.
Discussions, debates, and reflective journals encourage
deep comprehension and personal expression.
